Guarding Your Gifts When Partnering with Others

In my last blog post, I spoke about the fallacy in the competition mindset. This week, I will discuss how to invite and share with others without being jilted in your business? How do you guard your gifts? I dealt with this question for many years. How do I share without giving away the farm? And at what point are you living in fear that someone will steal your ideas.

Competition develops out the self-limiting belief that anyone can do what we do. Believing others can do what you do is the world’s way of making you believe “different” doesn’t exist. You have to break away so you can be different.

1 Peter 4:10 NIV- Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

I met people who followed me because they believe I am nice. Most people believe nice to be naive or gullible. I am sharp and because I am nice it only means I don’t call you out in front of a crowd. However, the hard part was I did not want to be caught up in the competition mindset so I gave what I could. I promoted others often before I promoted myself. After all, self-promotion is selfish right? Wrong. A trick from the world and another blog post. The world’s beliefs, often spoken of in the bible, is out of alignment with the word of God.

How I Guarded My Gifts

I learned to promote myself. And if the person I am partnering with has the same skill set we determine how we can work together without competing. I looked for certain qualities in my affiliate or colleague:

1. Does this person often compare themselves to others?
2. Does this person focus more on money than relationships?
3. Do you see signs of desperation in this person?
4. Does this person try to pitch all of their services to everyone? Or reach out to your potential clients behind your back?
5. Does this person promote you or is willing to promote you?
6. What are their values and beliefs? Yes, this is important 2 Corinthians 6:14- NIV- Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?

The Healthy Way to Work As A Team

Helping someone in a similar industry involves helping them improve with certain tools in their business or helping them hone in on their spiritual gifts or talents. Our job is not to make others into our image but help to lead them to Christ or to mature in Christ. Keep that in mind when helping others and when someone is trying to copy you. Perhaps they can copy the standard skills but each spiritual gift is truly different because we are individuals.

Make sure you agree on the services you will offer and what the affiliates will offer so you don’t step on each other’s toes. And allow the Holly Spirit to lead all of you.
