Customer Service Versus People Pleasing- Mindsets, Money, and True Business Freedom Part 4

Customer service versus people pleasing. How many people think the two are the same? Customer service is important and giving quality customer service should be based on the principle of “love others as you love yourself,” this principle is actually based on a Bible verse Matthew 22:39 NIV.  Perhaps, you may need to love others better than you love yourself if you struggle with low self-esteem or if you struggle with putting yourself first but that’s another topic for another day. Treat others as you would like to be treated.

After 10 years of being self-employed and 15 years as an employee, I think people have confused customer service with people pleasing. Customer service should not infringe on the proper treatment of others. I have had clients who use their money to control others. Clients who use money to control people and situations expect to come above all else. I was expected to immediately take their calls. I was expected to work on Sundays. But Sunday is the day I take off for worship and rest. And because I did not know the difference….I have stepped out of the church to respond to their calls. I have left my family sitting at the table because I thought that it was great customer service and it would build trust.

Galatians 1:10 NIV”- Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

Unfortunately, people who expect you to jump for money will expect you to continue that throughout the entire process until they find someone else. And it’s easy to find people who confuse customer service with people pleasing. I learned to let go and trust the money would be replaced and it was with more than before.


I don’t base how I treat others on the amount of money paid.  You will receive respect from me regardless of what you pay.

Be advised, people pleasing will drain your strength, spirit, and money. We provide quality customer service when we listen to God about how he wants us to serve our clients or customers! We work harder and lose money when we try to serve people the way we think they should be served.
