Getting Over the Pricing Hurdle for Christian Business Owners

Most Christ Followers struggle with earning income. Many believe we should give it all away or earn very little. Sadly, there are Christian business owners who misunderstand the need for profit and believe they should only collect enough to cover a specific event or single needs.

Let’s look at a passage 1 Corinthians 9 NIV where Paul discusses income. Paul earns money for the ministry through his business (tent making).  Read the entire chapter of 1 Corinthians 9 to receive the entire context. I will only highlight a portion of the passage here.

” 6 Or is it only I and Barnabas who lack the right to not work for a living? 7 Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its grapes? Who tends a flock and does not drink the milk? 8 Do I say this merely on human authority? Doesn’t the Law say the same thing? 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses: “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.”[b] Is it about oxen that God is concerned? 10 Surely he says this for us, doesn’t he? Yes, this was written for us, because whoever plows and threshes should be able to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest. 11 If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? 12 If others have this right of support from you, shouldn’t we have it all the more?”

What do we learn from this portion of the passage 1 Corinthians 9:6-12 NIV?

Have we been misled?

In 1 Corinthians 9 NIV (the entire chapter)- Paul gives examples of people who accept money for their trade and he compares it to people like him who had a ministry (non-profit) but was not a church. Paul also touched on the income of those who served in the church.

We have allowed Mammon (Satan) to misled us about ministry workers, non-profits, and other Christian business owners. We are led to believe we should not be in business or we should not share the word of God and charge for services through our platforms. Look for God to guide you on how to use your gifting and he will show you when to charge.  For example: If God gives you a word to share with someone do not charge that person to share that word.

Can I charge if I am using my gifting?

Many people will say “I use my gifts in my business so I should not charge.”  Not exactly, for example, I encourage people in the word of God for free. However, I also encourage people in business with teaching and training in business and accounting based on biblical principles for which I do charge because this is biblical based business training. I do not sell my gifts as that is cheating people and misuse of our gifts. I charge for business services and we honor God in all we do. Do you see the difference? What is your gifting? Do you know the difference? It’s fine if you don’t know and I had to learn my gifting as well. Knowing our gifting impacts pricing.

God gives us gifting to support the church and to earn a living. We can not help support the church if we do not earn a living. Remember this does not mean you should over charge or take advantage of people. Be fair in pricing to yourself and others. Charging outrages pricing to earn a certain figure a month is not fair treatment and it is not the abundance mindset. You can reach your income goals by following God.

Additional Passages

Also, read 2 Kings 1 The woman with the vessels.

Here’s a couple of my favorite verses:  2 Kings 1:6-7 NIV ” So the oil ceased. 7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.” A means of living and to get out of debt!

Read and study the entire passage. How are you feeling about charging for services now?
