About God’s Business Podcast: Is Elegant A Cover Up for Excess?

Many people are conditioned into thinking that earthly royalty is essential.    Have we masqueraded elegant as an excuse for excess? I watch many people plan events that promise expensive and elaborate fixings.  However, nice as that sounds to imagine ourselves as earthly royalty, have we given ourselves the right to justify spending?

Jesus did not have expensively laid out dinners or weekends.  Repeatedly the people expected him to show him as the earthly royalty did but Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.” John 18:36, also read John 18:37.

Today we are part of the Kingdom of Heaven.  We are sons and daughters of the Elohim. Yeshua or Jesus is our LORD and Savior and has gone ahead of us to prepare a place.  Jesus’s prayer for the disciples and us as we are disciples.

John 17:15-18 New International Version (NIV)

15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by[a] the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.

We can establish from these scriptures that earth is not our home.  Therefore who are we imitating when we spend money to make ourselves feel like royalty.   I pray one day we will be dressed in wonderfully white robes. And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

I noticed about four years ago as Yeshua began to draw me closer to him because I seek him out, I lost the desire to dress like a diva.  There was a point in time when my hair had to be perfect; I had to have the right clothes, makeup, and jewelry. I had to be dress just right when I left home.

Although, I never desired to have a flashy car or house I wanted to fit in with other people specifically at church.  I had a supervisor who said she judges her employee candidates according to their manicure. And in the church, they are looking for those who have the “royalty” mindset.  Anything else was the poverty mindset to them. Although many churches say, they welcome the poor, or less fortunate the truth is they will look you up and down and decide your spiritual ability according to how you dress.

I decided that I had enough clothing.  We wear what we have until we wear it out or outgrow it but shopping just to have a new outfit is not how we roll.   We can all certainly enjoy what God has given us but we must not forget as Christ Followers we are to help others.
