Mindsets, Money, and True Business Freedom Part 1

Biz Freedom Blog 1 Image 6.2017 300x221
Creating TRUE Business Freedom!

When I first began my business 10 years ago I was still working a full-time job. I would often work 12 hour days 5-6 days a week. How I worked depended on the company and how the company responded to manager's request. I worked in payroll and if an error was made on an employee's pay I would have to go into the office and issue 1 check. The office was 35-40 minutes away depending on the traffic. I would have to go in even if it was a weekend or a holiday. This solution was a common practice because my managers believed this was good customer service. This began to hurt my family because there wasn't a reasonable system in place as to how we would rectify the situation and supply immediate funds to the employee without my additional work hours.

Find New Processes

The managers did not want to venture out into virtual solutions at the time. The owners and managers wanted everything in-house and under their thumb because they did not understand virtual systems. Their solutions, however, did not hinder them but impacted the employees. Soon it became apparent that management believed I was a problem because I believed we should have boundaries and that there are easier ways to perform our jobs. When my managers heard "Easier" they thought "Lazy." I thought effective and productive.

Certain mindsets hinder growth and productivity and in the end prove to cost more. We limit what we can do in our businesses when we operate in old processes or out of fear of learning new things. We operate off an old world mindset that more is better. Do more, work more, or be more. Somehow we have accepted that to be dedicated it means we have to be busy instead of productive. We must consider that finding new processes for better efficiency will allow us to increase production and income with less stress. The result is more impact and better quality as opposed to wasted hours just to say we worked longer.

When we invest time and money into developing effective processes we can increase the number of people we serve with a greater impact as well as increase your money management.

Do you base your business success on the number of hours you work? Do you base employee dedication on the number of hours they work or on the quality of work they can provide in a shorter amount of time? Does working more equate to a higher profit in your mind?

Action August: Financial Organization and Routines

Routines are a part of life. Whats your routine 300x300Most people don't really think about routines when it comes to money but time is money. Last weeks blog we covered 4 tips to start your financial organization. The number 1 tip was to record your transactions and number 4 was to record your routines. Just like many people I have many responsibilities to handle. Because I am a child of God first, I connect to him and I have noticed that everything else goes much smoother. I don't carry each responsibility by myself. Jesus first leads me through an intentional day to determine the to-do's I have to accomplish (Proverbs 17:24 NIV). I approach each day with a focus on what he wants. He also allows me room for creativity, but I find comfort in knowing I can run each idea by God, and ask for clarity when I feel I am running in circles. Having an idea of my routines determine how I spend the money resources. Do I need to purchase a new tool for a project? Do I need to give someone gas money? I prayerfully approach each task with questions.  Planning has helped to create freedom in my life by approaching my day this way. I allowed my to-dos and the shoulds to run my day for many years. And I could not understand why I was always frustrated. I spent time and money playing catch up from many unplanned expenses and schedules. I thought that I needed to be spontaneous because that's more fun, right? Wrong. Spontaneity without a basic plan cost time and money. We will talk more about how spontaneity fits into plans later.

Today, I have peace of mind and spirit in many areas of life.

Here are my top 5 tips for saving money around my routines. Yours may be different.

1. I avoid taking more than 1-2 trips to the store. I have 3-4 main stores that I shop and compare sales. Also those "small trips" add up. I like to know what we need before I go. I purchase all of my ingredients for dinners during my weekly grocery trip or pickup. I make sure I have all I need to make a recipe. I plan my meals in advance.

2. I stopped allowing the unexpected to drive my time and money. If a request for money pops up outside of my weekly or monthly financial plans I say no, if there is no room in the margin area. Perhaps, next week or next month. No is a friend. Delayed responses, as well as gratification, are very important to your mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, and financial health.

3. I leave a margin for the unexpected in time and money. Here's where spontaneity fits into the plan. Don't stress when plans fall through.

4. I cut out extra activities that cost money so I can pay for other required purchases; like football games to watch my son play. What are your priorities and needs?

5. I leave room to purchase my happy items. Self-deprivation is not a requirement for being a good financial steward. I make fun purchases in moderation and on certain days. This has helped me exercise my spirit of self-control by delaying gratification and responses. We have been given a spirit of self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7 but that doesn't mean it is activated when we receive the spirit. This spirit comes by way of the Holy Spirit and just like our skills, abilities, spiritual gifts, and gifts of the spirit they have to be exercised. Will power doesn't work but learn to ask God for help and guidance. Trusting him begins to activate that spirit of self-control helping you to delay those immediate purchases and responses. Let's brain storm together about routines and money.  Join the F.A.B.W.W. information listed below or go to the Fearless Abundantly Bless Women Workshop web page for more information.

Time & Money Versus Business Freedom- Money, Mindsets, & Creating Business Freedom Part 3

Do you often think business freedom would be nice but you have to work? And perhaps business freedom will have to come later. Do you add on more tasks becomes income is not coming in the way you would like? Or you need to keep up a hectic pace to earn money? After all, successful people work all day every day without taking a break, right? We should not look at building a business as time & money vs business freedom but time, money, AND business freedom. Yes, you can have it all. When I started my business I needed income and flexibility to be a parent while serving others.  I thought a business would bring me flexibility but due to outdated mindsets and lack of boundaries, I spent more time working in my business than working on my business. I was afraid the money would stop or slow down if I stopped. The response is to get creative. It's unhealthy to work 12 hour days almost every day of the week without a break. A successful business owner needs to know the importance of taking time off, setting boundaries, and creating alternative income plans. Watch the {Video} We take action by talking to God as we are planning.   We move when he prompts us to move. Faith without action is dead James 2:17 NIV. Move with intention with intelligent action. Proverbs 17:24 An intelligent person aims at the wise action but a fool starts off in many directions. How do you create business freedom and have time and money? Pray over all things and trust God Phillippians 4:6 NIV.
  • Set time boundaries, pay attention to pricing and spending.
  • Create revenue streams within your business.
  • Cultivate your current revenue streams.
  • Plan, execute and update marketing strategies.
  • Set working hours and office days for specific tasks.
  • Implement or update software that can save you time and money. (automation within reason)
  • Outsource when ready with a reasonable workload.
  • Set expectations with clients. Make sure you and the client are on the same page when delivering services and products.
We have to trust God.  Sometimes we have to let all other plans work and be still to wait on God before jumping to a new plan Psalm 37:7 NIV.

Action August: Reviewing the Lessons Learned

Social Media August week 5 300x300We are at the end of August! Wow, what a summer. I learned a lot this summer and it's time to review the lessons learned. End of summer of 2015, I did not have time to stop and notice small but important lessons along my journey. Summer end of 2016, I allowed God to pick up the pieces of the wreckage I created by trying to do everything on my own. Summer end of 2017, I see the blessings of allowing Christ to be the center of my life and business. I stepped back and opened the door to his help. I truly embraced. Matthew 11:28 NIV: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." I was tired of trying to carry it on my own. Today, anytime I feel myself trying to force an outcome I let it go.  It takes daily practice. I wish I could say it's immediate but it's not easy to let go. I am learning to listen and respond when God calls me to respond. You can also learn from your past routines, spending, and time.

Learn the importance of delegation and minimizing at home and in business.

Often, we are so busy trying to do other people jobs (micromanaging) that we miss doing the job we are called to do. We do this with God too. We are so busy trying to be God that we miss God on our part. And missing our part is disobedience. I have learned to have faith that God will take care of us.  I can step in at the moment of His instruction. I appreciate His guidance. How does this relate to business? Because when we don't know what is required in business and what is a desire, we don't understand where we step in to take faithful action. We tend to spend our resources in the all the wrong areas. We miss how to use the resources we receive to best benefit God's purpose for us.

Learn to let go and let God in your resources.

How can you let go and let God in your resources? Start by reviewing your income, spending, and routines. Review your cash tracking for the last 3-4 weeks. Not sure what I am talking about? Read "Action August: Starting Financial Organization."

  1. Where did you spend the most money? Why? How do you feel?
  2. Where did you earn the most income? Why? How do you feel?
  3. How do your routines contribute to spending? Is it a good thing? Such as do you feel relief? Or did you feel like you wasted money?
  4. Where should you delegate or eliminate tasks that are not yours to complete? Stop trying to do it all.

Eliminate unproductive habits.

Routines determine how we spend our time and time is money. Ask God to guide you through the most important routines. If I don't have a plan on what I need to do first thing in the morning, I will not consult with God and I would not stay on track. I eliminate emails in the morning and only accept text from my children. That allows me control over my time.

The Essentials for Fair Pricing and Profit

Social Media July Week 4 1 300x300Fair pricing is important for an honest business owner. The world focuses on how to get rich fast. When pricing we have to avoid the world's view. I have noticed that certain terms or phrases can make us feel we are not at a good point in our business or where God wants us to be. The world uses terms or phrases such as "up level" and on a "higher level" to move forward fast but is that what Jesus teaches? Jesus treats everyone the same and we are already sons and daughters of the King of Kings. We are royalty regardless of the classification of the world. We will miss our current development if we constantly focus on levels or "moving up." I believe we move in phases and not levels. While we are waiting for the next phase of life God pulls the old roots out. God plants new seeds to grow...Godly seeds instead of worldly seed. It's a great time to get to know or to get closer to Jesus. Plan and ask for your next steps like Nehemiah. Nehemiah 1:4 NIV- 4 "When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven."

The Uplevel Mindset Impact On Money

We lose money when we pour it into purchases that promise to uplevel or move to the next level. Next level thinking also says you're not earning enough or you should be further than what you are in this business. We are prompted to increase sales fast and we end up with less than ideal clients. God will move you when he's ready. Are you focused on hearing God, on changing mindsets and perhaps business and personal development to move to the next phase?

Be Honest About Your Time and Workload

Be honest about what you can handle now while recording the vision for later. Enjoy your learning process. This process is going to strengthen your business, finances, and your heart for later when you do grow.

Don't Chase Riches with Unfair Pricing

Price fairly not to get rich fast. I see many coaches charging 10K fees to people who can not afford the fee but they convince them their thinking is not big enough and they can help them get there. This is a ploy and usually, leaves the purchaser at a loss. Treat your clients better. 10K can be a future goal. But what will be a blessing to you and your clients now? Perhaps you can charge $500.00 for now. Will that meet your financial needs and goals? Ease into pricing and increase pricing every year.

Trust God

He said, "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Make sure you desire more than things but the "much" Luke 16:10 NIV. The "much" is heavenly riches, people, eternal life. If God can trust you to manage something small like the money, he will bring your ideal clients and more.   {Watch the Video}

Successful Financial Strategies Keep It Simple

Social Media Wk 3 2 300x300Successful financial strategies keep it simple. Last week we discussed creating multiple streams of income with wisdom. Most business owners begin working with multiple strategies that are distractions in their business. Multiple streams of income are birth from your current processes. What stream of income can you create that will not cause a financial hardship? What can you create that will allow you to use current resources? Although there are times in a business that feel as if you need money now we have to be aware of how we earn the money. If you are spending more than you are earning you will create a greater shortfall. I have watched many business owners who started a new business because someone else made fast money.  The business owner they were trying to mimic was focused on 1-2 business ideas that stemmed from one business. He had money from business #1 to start business #2 and he had the marketing down. The other business owners were still trying to build business #1. If business #1 is not off the ground you have to focus on that business. Unless you are in a business you did not feel called to be in for the long term. There are businesses that are meant to fund the business that God has purposed for us. I wasted a lot of time by being distracted in my business. This Sunday in church the pastor taught about regrets. I regret I put people before God. I have learned the hard way to listen to God first and not what everyone else or the world is doing. I imagine how much further I would have been if I would have focused on God first. But since I can't go back I must go forward and make sure I focus on God this time. I trust he will turn this around for his good! Romans 8:28 New International Version (NIV) 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose. Keep it simple.

Take Action:

  1. Why are you starting a new business?
  2. Is a completely new business better than a new stream of income?
  3. What will it cost you to start the new business?
  4. What processes do you have planned to earn income in the new business?
  5. How will you maintain and build your current business while building the new business?
  6. How much more will this cost you?

Creating Pricing Packages with Customer Service Top of Mind

What do you think about first when you think of pricing packages?  Most of us consider how can we create a profit.  What if I tell you pricing should come as a normal flow of services?  Yes, it does involve calculating what you earn.  We need to know the status of our finances. But, earning a large profit should not be the primary driving force of your business.  I found freedom in serving clients first.  It's the same as it is more blessed to give than to received mindset.  If we give and trust God to take care of our needs and wants we are blessed beyond measure.  Plan your packages with this in mind.  You will attach a price but try not to force services or products on people in order to reach your price.  We will have clients that we are not able to serve and that's okay.  A pricing plan will help you stay the course to what you can do and what you need to earn and it helps the clients with their budget.  Two happy parties! Start small and as you grow your profits will grow as well.  Visit my Free Information Page to see an example of a pricing template and you can download a PDF with additional information to walk you through the steps to create a pricing plan for your business. The tools include helpful bible verses to help you lead with the heart of God first.  Invite God into your pricing plan and what how your service and product ideas will come together! Bible Verses: Romans 12:6 NIV- We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; Romans 11:29 NIV for God's gifts and his call are irrevocable Podcast reference:  Inspirational Listen Here to Kingdom Driven Entrepreneur with Shae Bynes

Financial Success Is Found In The Middle of Peace

Social Media Oct Wk 1 300x300It's a wonder that doing less feels productive but somehow the world views it as lazy. "Less is more" is my focus for this year. I learned this principle by focusing on God.  I found financial success in the middle of peace. Because God is in all aspects of our lives His principles for everyday living are the best principles ever! Man complicates tasks because we believe it could not be that simple. We make the same mistakes in money. One of my biggest goals in money and time was to stop feeling like a moving target. In the past, I tried hard to follow a plan but it seemed I would fail. Trying to manage these giants on our own is overwhelming and self-defeating. I follow a well-known productivity manager but lately one of his email titles said, "Time Management Is A Waste Of Time." I disagree. If we focus on God first, he will give us the desires of our heart. Psalm 34:4. Financial freedom is similar to some religious beliefs. Many people don't believe that salvation is obtained through Christ and not through our works Philippians 3:8-10. Most believe this about financial freedom. Many believe that we have to work day and night to have financial freedom. We do not create wealth by our own hands but God creates wealth. Deuteronomy 8:18. Because God creates wealth he will guide us into how he plans to give us wealth. We work in his wisdom, rest, and guidance.

4 tips to organize finances:

1. Create separate accounts for business and personal transactions and income

2. Create separate accounts for auto drafts. Auto-drafts should be in an account with a very low balance after the drafts complete.

3. Go through what I call a financial fasting. There was a time when all of my expenses were more than my income. I had to eliminate a large number of expenses. Usually, expenses increase faster than income. But income can and will increase.

4. Avoid increasing expenses every time income increases. You first have to be able to break even and save without a pinch before adding a new expense.

Remember there are seasons for certain expenses. Perhaps there's an expense that we think we can't live without but we can. Turn this expense into a celebration expense for all of your hard work on occasions. You will appreciate it more. I learned through the lean times that I was not living in deprivation but I learned to live with less. Now, I feel more in control and wealthier. Philippians 4:12 NIV

Action August: Starting Financial Organization

Social Media August Wk 2 1 300x300God is a God of order. Because God is a God of order I realized that his order brings clarity. I allowed my heart to be changed in his word by meditating on the word of God morning and evening and when things are good or bad (Joshua 1:8 NIV).  Yes, this is a process. Now I have the clarity to create systems that help to save me time and money. My goal is to be a good steward of the time and money God has given me to manage. I am an accountant and I know the regulations and benefits of tracking transactions. But it's more important to know how to properly use the money to serve God. Mastering money God's way was a major heart change, faith walk, and renewal of the mind.

4 Tips to Start Money Management

Track your spending for at least 1 month without changes

  • We first need to know where we are before we can move forward. Ask God to help you reach your goals and to give you clarity. Or review past purchases.

Write down your goals (Financial, Spiritual, Physical, Business, Work, Education, all types of Goals.)

  • While you are tracking your spending write out your Goals. Changing money habits takes time and will not happen over night, so give yourself grace and forgiveness.  A great goal planner is Lara Casey's "Power Sheets" you can get those at her store on Cultivate What Matters.
  • Slow down and listen to God. I would also recommend a bible study "The Best Yes" by Lysa Terkeurst.  Excellent book for slowing down. We can hear, sense, and feel what God wants when we slow down on our choices. Slowing down builds that God connection.

Journal your feelings around money You can make this entry next to the transaction

  • Do you feel uncomfortable when you think you should avoid a purchase? Or do you feel guilty? Do you feel like you deserve a purchase? Why did you make the purchase? The goal here is to pay attention to your emotions and thoughts.

Track your routines

Routines include everything you do throughout the day.  All of us have routines..even those who don't like to plan.   The most successful people work with their cycle of habits instead of trying to mimic someone else.

  • Track your routines because your daily habits impact money.  Not all routines or habits are bad habits.  We need to learn how to work around the good routines that need more love.
  • Modify, stop or start current routines (that work for you not everyone else).

The goal is to learn to love who you are in God.  By doing so we understand we are all different and so are our habits.  Most of the habits we have are for our God assignments and not your neighbors or your best friend.   As long as our habits are beneficial and pleasing to God, we will be successful! Seek God's Favor In Your Finances

social media Oct wk 3 2 300x300I remember when I did not seek God's favor in finances. Instead, I tried to carry it all on my own. And as the head of household and a sole entrepreneur in my own company, the responsibilities became more than I could handle.

"If we seek good we find favor with God." Proverbs 11:2 NIV.

God is our refuge Psalm 91:4. God supplies all of our needs Philippians 4:19 NIV. Before seeking God I walked around stressed when it was time to order office supplies, go to the grocery store, purchase needed software or fill a need around the house.  God goes before us Deuteronomy 3:18 -I asked His favor to open doors that seem to be closed including finances. I have learned to seek God first in all I do. In essence, we are giving our burden to Christ as he told us to do.

Matthew 11:28-30 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” We also have to wait with expectancy. If you ask and do not believe then you are limiting your own resources. Matthew 13:58 "And he (Jesus) did not do many miracles there because of their (the people) lack of faith." Waiting on God will eliminate the silent money leaks Credit Card Debt- Credit cards take up future income. Because these options seem like a blessing at the time it is really a trap for future income. You are responsible for paying back the debt. Lease agreements are also a promise of future income. If you have to lease an equipment or a car you are throwing money out of the window. Most lease agreements force a future purchase. If you are making lease payments you will have to save the money for the future purchase. Many people start all over with a never-ending lease and interest. Don't fall for the "it's tax deductible." The deduction is not worth the interest you pay in the end. What happens when income slows down? Stock- stock can include inventory, supplies, and surprise household items. We so often try to separate work from home that we don't pay attention to the supplies and items in the home for which we have duplicates. Knowing what you have on hand in business and personal life will save you thousands of dollars and space. He will provide. I often find myself amazed and thankful for his creativity. If we are not keeping our eyes and hearts open we often miss what God will do.
