Mindsets, Money, and True Business Freedom Part 1
When I first began my business 10 years ago I was still working a full-time job. I would often work 12 hour days 5-6 days a week. How I worked depended on the company and how the company responded to manager's request. I worked in payroll and if an error was made on an employee's pay I would have to go into the office and issue 1 check. The office was 35-40 minutes away depending on the traffic. I would have to go in even if it was a weekend or a holiday. This solution was a common practice because my managers believed this was good customer service. This began to hurt my family because there wasn't a reasonable system in place as to how we would rectify the situation and supply immediate funds to the employee without my additional work hours.
Find New Processes
The managers did not want to venture out into virtual solutions at the time. The owners and managers wanted everything in-house and under their thumb because they did not understand virtual systems. Their solutions, however, did not hinder them but impacted the employees. Soon it became apparent that management believed I was a problem because I believed we should have boundaries and that there are easier ways to perform our jobs. When my managers heard "Easier" they thought "Lazy." I thought effective and productive.
Certain mindsets hinder growth and productivity and in the end prove to cost more. We limit what we can do in our businesses when we operate in old processes or out of fear of learning new things. We operate off an old world mindset that more is better. Do more, work more, or be more. Somehow we have accepted that to be dedicated it means we have to be busy instead of productive. We must consider that finding new processes for better efficiency will allow us to increase production and income with less stress. The result is more impact and better quality as opposed to wasted hours just to say we worked longer.
When we invest time and money into developing effective processes we can increase the number of people we serve with a greater impact as well as increase your money management.
Do you base your business success on the number of hours you work? Do you base employee dedication on the number of hours they work or on the quality of work they can provide in a shorter amount of time? Does working more equate to a higher profit in your mind?
