The Scapegoat Client and Protecting Profits

Listen to the audio as you follow along.

A couple of weeks ago I came across an article about scapegoating.  The article caught my attention because the term was created from a biblical sacrifice process that would place the sins of Y’isreal on a goat that was sent out into the woods.  The goat signified the placing of sins back on the one that caused a multitude of sins.

Leviticus 16 KJV

And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.

And Aaron shall offer his bullock of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make an atonement for himself, and for his house.

And he shall take the two goats and present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats: one lot for the Lord, and the other lot for the scapegoat.

And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the Lord's lot fell and offer him for a sin offering.

10 But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the Lord, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.

However today this term is used to place the blame on others often referred to as “they.”  Sometimes the “they” is not really a person, but it is still a way of still placing your sins and mistakes on something else or others.  I have experienced this in life and business.  The person that blames others fails to accept that they are not perfect and often will not accept any correction well.

I have seen people that poorly manage their money and time blame their poor habits and decisions on others.  I see people often blame the accountant caused them to have a tax bill as if they would not have taxes in the first place.  But not properly tracking your business transactions is what caused the problem.  Many business owners wait until they receive a tax notice with the agency over estimating taxes to finally get serious.  Often by then, they do not have a history of expenses.  Many will just write down a number and when you do this you need to be ready to back up those numbers.  A bank statement is not enough to document a purchase because many stores or vendors handle business and personal sales.  Many people falsely believe that they should not have to pay taxes.

The lazy jealous person -this person fails to perform their assigned tasks often blames someone else for holding them up or why the process was not completed.  Often jealous people will do this as a form of stalling your process.  You can hear the happiness in their voice when things do not work out for you.  But when you tell them it is something, they failed to do they blame it on you or someone else.  They need the out even if they were wrong so blame it on someone else.

The White Liar - We are also seeing people in the business failing to provide full disclosure so they can later claim I left the information out, but they never provided it, that is why my data collection process is important for my business.  Those that like an easy button or that have devious motives try to avoid my procedures.  I let them go now because they will cost you time and money in the end.  I must watch out for the partial truth-teller in business as they have learned that they could possibly leave someone else footing the bill.  How can we support each other if someone is always seeking to underhand your business for what they call “easy money?”  People do not seem to want to create a business idea from their gifting and work on that idea until YAH gives the increase.  YAH walks with us along the way.  However, blaming others for failures is very popular now.

The Oral Agreer - Be careful and watch out for those individuals.  Your terms of services (service and product-based business, your service agreement for a service-based business, detailed deliverable information so you can set expectations.  Get signatures as the client/customer saw these documents as they will play the memory lost game to cheat you out of money.  Remember the children of the world cannot wait to deceive and cheat people.

Pay attention to your pricing and how you perform your services or provide your products as this person is dishonest.  Make sure you can produce the agreements with signature and keep track of email.  If you are an oral agreement person and handle everything over the phone with documentation or records you will find this person will use this against you.  You will find they will renege on every agreement and blame you.  Your money depends on watching out for this person and it is alright to turn away people that do not want records and documentation.  Email is an important process and I have applications not that I can tell when someone opens their emails.  I have had people pretend I did not send out the email or the invoice.   Learn more about pricing in my pricing course: Creating A Fair Pricing Plan

Using ticket systems is helpful as you have another method for organizing and prioritizing tasks for the client.  My favorite application is Zoho Desk.  I can look back on past interactions and you can priorities the service requests.  I have experienced people that like to wait until the last minute and then jump in front of others with their expectations.  I do not play favorites.  All clients receive respect and service is provided in the order of receipt.

Using invoicing applications helps me to see if the client received the invoice.  One thing I like about Zoho Books is the ability to see if the client opened the invoice.  A person pretending, they already paid or did not see the invoice will show in the system.  The person will say there is something wrong with your system.  Do not fall for that lie.  Provide services after payment is received.  If you do not receive payment stop services.  Receive payment for your product before shipping and do not ship if you do not receive payment.  Your desperation for money will show, and you will be cheated.

Remember you reap (get back or harvest) what you sow.
